Where to Find Your VIN on the Car and Its Documents

Where to Find Your VIN on the Car and Its Documents

Your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is stamped in several places on the vehicle and printed on its official documents. Knowing all of them matters: comparing the VIN across locations is the fastest way to spot tampering, cloned identities, or paperwork fraud before you buy a used car in the UAE.

The Short Answer: 4 Places to Check

Check the dashboard on the driver's side (visible through the windscreen), the driver's door jamb sticker, the engine bay stamping, and the vehicle's documents — registration card (mulkiya), insurance policy, and service book. If the 17-character code matches in all of them, the vehicle's identity is consistent.

1. Dashboard — Driver's Side

The primary VIN plate is riveted to the dashboard on the driver's side, readable through the windscreen from outside the car. This is the location dealers, inspectors, and police check first. The plate should be cleanly riveted — never glued, taped, or screwed on. On most brands sold in the UAE (Toyota, Ford, BMW, Nissan, Hyundai), this plate is in the same spot.

2. Driver's Door Jamb Sticker

Open the driver's door and look at the door frame: a manufacturer sticker lists the VIN alongside tyre pressures, paint code, and production month/year. Because stickers are easier to reproduce than stamped plates, treat this as a secondary confirmation, not the sole source. If the sticker is missing, peeling, or shows a different VIN than the dashboard, investigate before proceeding.

3. Engine Bay and Frame Stampings

The VIN is permanently stamped into the body — typically on the firewall, strut tower, or frame rail in the engine bay, and sometimes under the front seats or in the boot floor. These stampings are the hardest to fake. On a pre-purchase inspection, ask the mechanic to verify at least one stamped VIN against the dashboard plate.

4. Official Documents (UAE)

  • Registration card (mulkiya): the VIN is printed alongside the plate number, chassis number, and owner details. The chassis number on UAE documents should match the VIN's last digits.
  • Insurance policy: lists the VIN to tie coverage to the specific vehicle.
  • Service history and owner's manual: dealer service records reference the VIN — useful for verifying mileage consistency and catching odometer fraud.

What If the VINs Don't Match?

Stop the deal and investigate. Common causes, from innocent to criminal:

  • Clerical error on insurance or registration paperwork — fixable at the RTA or insurer.
  • Replaced panels — a door jamb sticker from a donor door after accident repair.
  • Tampering or cloning — a re-stamped plate hiding a stolen or salvage vehicle.

Rule of thumb: paperwork errors can be corrected through official channels; physical VIN tampering cannot be explained away. When in doubt, have the vehicle inspected and the documents verified before any money changes hands.

What If You Can't Find the VIN?

On older vehicles or imports, plates can corrode or stickers fade. Check the engine bay stampings and the registration card first. If the VIN is genuinely unreadable everywhere, don't buy until the identity is verified — the RTA or the manufacturer's authorised dealer can help trace it from the registration records.

VIN Location FAQs

Is the VIN always 17 characters? Yes, for vehicles built from 1981 onward. The 17-character format is an international standard — every character has a defined meaning, from the manufacturer identifier to the check digit and serial number. Older classics may have shorter serial numbers instead.
Can I look up a car's history with just a photo of the VIN plate? Yes — as long as all 17 characters are clearly readable. Enter the code exactly as shown, without spaces, into a VIN check to pull specifications, accident, auction, title, and recall records where available.
Should the VIN on the mulkiya match the car exactly? Absolutely. The registration card's chassis/VIN must match the physical vehicle character for character. Any mismatch can cause problems with registration transfer, insurance claims, and resale — verify it before you sign anything.
